John's Thoughts

Opposing Wawa

Published in today's Vineland Daily Journal. Also in today's paper, the inspiration for a future letter to the editor.

I didn't think they were going to publish my letter. I wrote and submitted it last Monday (24th) and didn't hear from them until Thursday. By then, it was old news.

Well you can bet your ass I DID think they were gonna publish it, which is why I've been picking up the Daily Journal ever since they called and told you they were gonna publish your submission. I now have a newfound appreciation for local newspapers and all the weird/funny shit I can read about in them. For that reason I may just have to pick up the paper on a daily basis, along with my morning Wawa coffee. Cause I don't hate Wawa in general, as I'm sure no one does. But I still think you were right to oppose it being built on that spot and to write in about it, even if your opinion was published a little late. It still lets people see the wide amount of opposition, considering I think ever since that original article was published there was a different write-up about it in the opinion sections every day since.

I've thought many times of sending in some letters to the editor, however, I doubt mine would ever be published since we all know of my caustic nature, and the tendency of the responses I get to be violent opposition. I'd somehow manage to piss off the whole of Cumberland County and end up having to move due to death threats and the like. But who knows, maybe the editor likes causing controversy and will publish it just to get a rise out of people. Maybe someday...

Anyway, I liked your letter. It was professional and you got to the point quickly. I see so many of those letters that are just pointless and annoying to read and I sometimes wonder what moron of an editor would allow them in the paper, unless they just want people to mock the poor fool.

Thank you Steph. I'll proof any letters you write and help you cut down on the caustic-ness.

You really should write a letter for the paper if you feel strongly about something local. Getting involved with your community in any way will benefit everyone, even if you're just a critic. Critics bring another point of view to the table and can help policymakers see matters in ways they may not have thought of.

Being a critic can also get you killed.

Hmm. Sounds good. I'll do it.

I just need to find something that pisses me off first...

Shouldn't be too hard.

Great that you protested in person and writing! I find it kind of ironic that Wawa is supposed mean wild geese in a native language, but they'll plow down the geese habitat to build a place to buy Tastycakes. WWARD? (What Would Ayn Rand Do?) (Please help to perpetrate the abbreviation!)BTW,in my experience though, geese can be nasty.
